"The word “organic” is being used far too frequently lately. A small plastic storage container I recently purchased was even labeled “organic.” What could that possibly mean in the case of plastic?"

Plastic is technically "organic" since it's based on hydrocarbons. For that matter all "artificial" pesticides are also "organic". The word "organic" means something very different to scientists than it does to most hippies...

I do understand where you are coming from on this issue of organic produce. Even in my own small personal garden (in Ohio) I have trouble growing much of anything without at least some use of pesticides.

I teach nutrition and I am more concerned about seeing people (teens in my case) eat fruit in the first place than worrying excessively about the issue of organic produce.

I've been percolating a series of posts on "Why It's Harder Than You Might Think To Do The Right Thing." One is about recycling. One is about personal energy use. Even doing the posts is turning out to be harder than you might think.

All of life is a balancing act, and no one has all the right answers. That's why I appreciate thoughtful analysis and a willingness to hear about different experiences.

Thanks, John.
