Michigan Peach Berry Crisp Recipe

Just read a wonderful article on delectable Michigan peaches in The Detroit News, along with a simple recipe for Peach Berry Crisp using Michigan peaches and berries.  You can also use blackberries or strawberries along with the peaches, or use nectarines in place of peaches.

From The Detroit News:

Peachy Berry Crisppeach berry crisp

3 large peaches, peeled, pitted, chopped (about 3 cups)
2 cups blueberries
2 cups raspberries
1/2 cup sugar
2 tablespoons plus 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup oatmeal (not instant)
1/2 cup (packed) light brown sugar
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon cardamom
1/4 teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons unsalted butter
Vanilla ice cream or frozen yogurt

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter 8-inch square or oval baking dish. Toss fruit, sugar and 2 tablespoons flour in large bowl to combine. Transfer to prepared baking dish. Bake fruit until juices bubble, stirring occasionally, about 40 minutes. Bake without stirring another 5 minutes. Remove from oven. Increase oven temperature to 400 degrees.

Meanwhile, whisk remaining 3/4 cup flour, oats, sugar, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom and salt in medium bowl to blend. Add butter and rub in with fingertips until small moist clumps form. Sprinkle topping evenly over hot fruit in dish.

Bake crisp until topping is golden brown, about 20 minutes. Cool slightly. Serve warm with ice cream. Serves 8.

Fruit Filled Friday Orchard Tour

Fruit-Filled Friday Orchard Tour at King Orchards

“Meg’s Market Update”

Hey there! It’s Megan, Betsy and John’s niece. I’m going to be taking over the blog a little, along with Courtney and a few of the other “fruit stand girls”, so stay tuned to know what’s fresh at King Orchards.

Raspberries

Today is our first day for U-Pick raspberries! I’m definitely excited, they’re one of my favorite fruits to eat here. They look beautiful, and taste great. Bring the family and get out here! Our raspberries should last all summer, with short 1-2 week breaks in between “batches”.

If you’re wondering about when we’re getting our own sweet cherries into the market and u-pick, John says they’ll be in full-swing for the weekend. Until then, we have some delicious cherries from Grand Rapids, MI. Be sure to come in and get them while they’re fresh! -Megan K.

Happy 4th of July!

We drove the golf cart in the Central Lake parade today! The market has been busy and the pies were piled high this morning. With no cherries ripe there has been more than one disappointed u-pickers. My standard answer is that we will pick some black sweets this week and try to get the u-pick started this week-end (7/10). We found 2 ripe raspberries so those are on the way. The blueberry man call and will be bringing a load up next Friday 7-10. The season is almost here!

Summertime, and the Pickin’ is Easy

U-Pick CherriesBring the whole family to the orchard for a fun, affordable day trip they won’t soon forget! Our trees are all specially trimmed so the cherries are accessible, even for small children.

Pick your own tart cherries: You can pick your own tart cherries in season right from the tree and we will wash them and pit them for you. This year they are $1.00 a pound, and there is a flat $6 fee for washing and pitting (any amount) while you wait.

Still Picking Sweets: The sweet cherry picking is really great right now. You can pick dark sweet (Bing) cherries for $1.75 per pound, and light sweets (Rainier or Queen Anne) for $1.25 a pound.

Picking Raspberries: We also have raspberries ripening and turning deep red in the warm, summer sun. You can go out to the patch and pick your own for $4 a pint.

Fruit Harvest Calendar

We’ve been getting lots of calls this week about u-picking. For general estimates, our Harvest Calendar offers a month by month guide to what’s in season, from May blossoms through October pumpkins.

We’re still thinking sweet cherries will be ready around the 8th or 10th of July, but you might be able to pick raspberries by the 4th. We’ll keep you posted!

In the meantime, enjoy this travel video Brian Kaufman from the Detroit Free Press shot last summer, which features an interview with John King and cherry lovers & pie makers from Chicago.

Coming Soon… Strawberries and Raspberries!

Hey everyone! Megan here, writing for Betsy while she’s at church. (For those of you that don’t know me, I’m John and Betsy’s niece that lives here on the farm with them.) The season really feels like it’s starting now, because of the strawberries coming in this upcoming weekend. But what I’m looking forward to is the raspberries. Uncle John says that they’re looking good and will be in in about 10 days. These ones won’t be here in 10 days, but in a couple years we will have a half-acre full of raspberries at the US-31 market! In other news, King Orchards will be going to the Traverse City Cherry Festival, July 4th-12th. See you there! :)
