I am pleasantly surprised at the fast pace of the ripening fruit. The raspberries will be open for u-pick in time for the Fourth of July. (Probably the M88 location will open first as apparently there are earlier varieties there.)
The sweet cherries might be open for u-pick around the Fourth also. We brought in a few from Grand Rapids to have some available last weekend and we hope to start select picking our own firm, sweet, sweet cherries for the Fourth of July.
I am checking them twice a day and I have coerced Jim and Betsy to go with me to evaluate and make predictions on the starting date. It is always difficult to get started. We typically make the decision to start, and line up a crew to pick with ladders and buckets and then after an hour we decide that the color is just not dark enough so we quit for another day or two. This year, however, I am confident that if we start slowly and pick only the trees that have a very light load we will get the best color and sweetest cherries first while the more loaded trees ripen up.
