Tart Cherry time is now! It’s a limb busting year with every branch loaded to the max. The fruit is bright red and full of flavor. Come out and pick you own Montmorency tart cherries. Our cherry pitter is running full speed at our M-88 Market and can pit all you can pick. It’s as easy as pie if that’s what you want to make. These pitted cherries freeze nicely and can be used in endless recipes. Today I heard about Cherry Clafoutis for the first time. I’m going to go home and try to make this rustic French desert. Check out the recipe I found.

Halloween is almost here and we’re getting in the spirit. Nothing gets you ready for a spooky night of fun more than drinking a little apple cider, picking out a jumbo pumpkin and then celebrating with a caramel apple.

Tree Ripened Apricots

As of 8/19, the u-pick apricots are looking good. There are quite a few on the trees but act fast before they get picked over! We will have these through the weekend.

These are a unique fruit for Michigan. If you have never had a fresh, tree ripened apricot, you are missing out! They have the texture of a peach and are as sweet as honey. Picking your own is fun for the whole family. They are easy to pick and can eat them right off the tree.

After an extremely plentiful and high quality crop, our sweet cherry u-pick season is coming to a close.

sweet cherry u-pick at King OrchardsWe held back the shaking crew as long as we could because the sweet cherry u-pick was so nice. The shaking crew did go through the sweet cherries at our M-88 Market yesterday so most of the cherries are off the trees, but there still is a few to pick that the shaker didn’t get off.

Fun Fact of the Day: We hand pick the majority of our sweet cherries and sell them fresh, however towards the end of the season we shake sweet cherry trees, just like our tart cherry trees. Then, we send these cherries off to processors who make them into black sweet cherry ice cream, black sweet cherry yogurt, and many other products.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this excellent sweet cherry crop!

Pick Your Own Tart Cherries in Full Swing

Pick your own tart cherries is finally open! We have our pitter running full speed. The cherries are full of flavor and the picking is good. Pick your own tart cherries are $1.25 per pound.

Tart cherries are very perishable, so the best way to preserve these cherries is to pick them right from the trees, then have them pitted right after you pick them. This way, you can pop them in your freezer for pies, smoothies, and ice cream topping year ’round!

Sweet cherries are still available for pick your own. They should be available through the week but tapering off towards the weekend.

The crop of sweet cherries this year is huge! We are opening u-pick on July 4th. It is always a challenge because the cherries don’t ripen evenly so the first couple days are always a little slower and more selective picking. We want people to be happy with the cherries they pick, so it just takes a little more work. We want volume pickers to be aware that the cherries will be darker and possibly sweeter with each passing day. By Monday or Tuesday, cherry harvest will be in full force.

Tart cherries should be ready for picking around July 15th. We have a great crop of raspberries but they are slowly trickling in. Picking should be better by next week (7/7).u-pick sweet cherries

Fall in Northern Michigan wouldn’t be the same without a walk through the orchard to pick your own apples! At King Orchards, we strive to make a fantastic apple picking experience for everyone. We grow dwarf apple trees and prune them specifically for u-pick apples to make it easy for people of all ages to pick. As of 9/19/14, we have Gingerold, McIntosh, Gala, and Honeycrisp apples to pick at our M-88 market. We will have many more varieties as we move into fall. We also have all these apples as well as Bartlett pears and Castelton plums available in both of our farm markets. Our 2nds on apples are slowly coming in and will be abundant in the next few weeks. We also will have Stanley prune plums coming soon.

U-pick raspberries are at their peak in the fall. Both of our markets offer pick your own raspberries. They are great for freezing this time of the year– just lay out on a cookie sheet or put in a baggy in a single layer for individually frozen raspberries.
