Welcome to the Montmorency Cherry FAQ section! Here at King Orchard in Northern Michigan, we’re excited to share everything you need to know about our beloved tart cherries. Whether you’re curious about how they’re grown, their health benefits, or tasty recipes to try, we’ve got you covered. Let’s explore the world of Montmorency cherries together!
We recommend drinking 1 oz. of concentrate per day. However, recent sleep studies have recommended 1 oz. in the morning and at night.
Some of our customers prefer the concentrate, some prefer the capsules, and others take both. The concentrate and capsules are made differently. The concentrate is made by pressing the cherries, extracting the juice, then concentrating that juice to 68 Brix through a slow evaporation process. After the cherries are pressed, the skins and pulp and freeze dried and encapsulated. The concentrate is great for its versatility – add it to water, a smoothie, yogurt, cocktail/mocktail, or anything you want to add a burst of tart cherry flavor to. The capsules are great for traveling or for people watching their sugar since they have less than 1 gram.
There is no added sugar in the concentrate – just Montmorency tart cherries!
There are approximately ½ lb. of cherries in every 1 oz. serving of concentrate.
The sky is the limit! Water and sparkling water are what we hear most people use, but you can mix with any beverage. Be creative with mocktails (or cocktails). Mix into your smoothie or protein drink. Some people even take it in concentrate form by the spoonful. For more creative recipes, check out our suggestions here.
For long term storage, the concentrate needs to be either refrigerated or put in the freezer (it doesn’t actually freeze solid or expand since it is so highly concentrated). Because it is so concentrated, it is very stable.
We do not have sound evidence indicating that a time of day is more or less beneficial. Although the concentrate is a natural source of melatonin, it is a much smaller dose than a melatonin supplement would be and it does not cause drowsiness. The benefits of the Montmorency cherries are typically realized as a subtle change over time as it becomes part of your daily regimen. We recommend at least 2 weeks of daily use before assessing whether you notice any benefits or not.
An best by date of 16 months is used at the time of bottling. Concentrate should be stored in the refrigerator or freezer.
